What I'm looking for in an invitation
I love simple yet classy designs. Anything that has filigree and / or paisley makes me happy. Renaissance, or Victorian styles are my favourite. Bits of vintage are always a good thing, too.
I stay away from modern designs that include dots or stripes. I like it swishy :)
I also don't like flowers or birds or trees. I just like my filigree and elaborate borders (or not!) aaand the script font.

Save The Dates
I'm not completely sure if I want to do Save The Dates, because from what I've heard they're a bit of waste of your money. Some guests completely forget after a while and the purpose of your STD is lost. However, we have out of town guests, and we're thinking of just sending them Save The Dates. Anyway, I want a simple design. Like the one to the left, by Smashing Cards!
UPDATE: Per my knotties advice, I am shopping around for invitations. My heart's still set on Smashing Cards, but according to general knowledge, it's wise to get a taste of other vendors before taking the deposit plunge. Fine, I'll do it.

UPDATE: Momma in law and I talked about it, she's all for Save the Date's for out of town guests. So FI and I have decided to go forward with that. These are some designs I picked up from Wedding Paper Divas.
UPDATE: We had the idea of combining holiday cards with Save The Dates. Not only does it save postage, but we would be sending STDs to the beloved people who would be getting invitations as well. How am I going to make this work? No idea.
Invitations
Oh, the invitations. As of now, I'm thinking of going to Crane & Co. and just getting them. But that's going to have to wait till Octoberish. I do know I don't want crazy colours, I want them very crisp, very elegant, very classic. With gold and burgundy, in ivory paper. Thermography, if I am able!
I am also considering Smashing Cards (www.smashingcards.com). Their invitations are absolutely beautiful. They kind make me want to cry.
IF I COULD JUST RECREATE THIS, I WOULD BE A HAPPY CAMPER.

UPDATE: As of Sept. 28th 2009.
I ... don't know what I'm going to do. I have a tight budget for these doggone invitations, and I really really really would like thermography, a pocketfolder and ... time to do this crap, eeeh.
Per advice, I browsed online for invitations. Wedding Paper Divas is good for STDs. But their actual invitations are not my taste. I'd like to go custom, but I don't want to pay more for paper than I will for my wedding dress. I met with Lois Allen from Atlas Designs, and she was such a sweetheart. She put up with me for 2 whole hours, and that's impressive! I am really torn on what to do. For minutes I have the urge to DIY.
I thought I had made my decision, but no, I am considering each possibility (even DIY), and will try to conduct this in the best way possible so as not to waste any of the vendors' time, everybody is so nice. RAH.
SO I DON'T KNOW.
The picture to the left are the colours we picked from when Lois came to see us. Burgundy, ivory and gold all over again!

UPDATE: Nov-Dec '09
I signed with Smashing Cards. I'm a happy - STOKED - camper :)
UPDATE: Dec 09
My preliminary designs are done! They look 10 times better in actual size. Lookee:
Ceremony Programs
Something I will have (even if I end up doing it myself - grgrgr) are programs. They make a wonderful keepsake, and I have tons of clueless relatives who will need to know that no, it is not time to throw rice just yet.
Menus
I think it adds a little something to the dinner experience if you find a beautiful menu on the table. The same as the ceremony programs, I'll do them myself if I have to.
I love the one to the left, also by Smashing Cards.

It's such a nice touch to send your guests off to a small thank you note. I would like these as well, I don't mind spending hours assembling them!
